Abstract
The urban population has been an important subject of research for a long time. Urban areas are heterogeneous in their social structure. This can be influenced by various factors: from the historically established "specialization" of the territory (area) and its development to the cost of housing. Some specialists also include social infrastructure in the social structure assessment system, which can be expressed in the quality, quantity and accessibility of healthcare, education, cultural and sports leisure, etc. Achieving a significant disparity in the availability of necessary social infrastructure affects people whose life strategies and situations are directly related to their place of residence. The culture of the city remains important. Moreover, both the individual cultural determinants of each citizen and the general culture associated with the spirit of the city significantly affect the type of settlement and zoning within the urban space. The concept of a vernacular city puts the cultural feelings of the city's residents at the heart of the historical type of planning. The purpose of the study was to compare the districts of two Russian cities (Moscow and St. Petersburg) in order to conduct a comparative analysis and identify the causes of the prevailing features of the socio-territorial settlement that is inherent in both cities. Currently, the social structure of residents of similar parts of the city differs in St. Petersburg and Moscow, which actualizes our research and hypotheses.
